Jyväskylä Big Band is the most active half-professional jazz band in Finland today. Most of the musicians in the band study music at the conservatory, university or already work as professionals. JBB cooperates with the pop and jazz department of the Conservatory of the Jyväskylä Vocational Institute. JBB plays Latin-Salsa, Modern Finnish Music, British Jazz, big band music arranged for children, and also traditional big band music.

Landmarks of Jyväskylä Big Band during recent years, Part 1
JBB has lately concentrated in playing Finnish contemporary big band music. We have ordered and performed originals from young Finnish composers, e.g. Kari Ikonen, Esa Onttonen, Joona Toivanen, Samuli Mikkonen, Jarkko Hakala, Matti Laukkanen, and Sami Sallinen. The next “First Impressions II” concert will be held in spring 2005.

In May 2004, JBB performed “First Impressions” premieres from Jarkko Hakala, Samuli Mikkonen, and Joona Toivanen with Markku Rinta-Pollari (sax), Jarkko Hakala (tpt), and Henri Haapakoski (cl) as guest soloists.

In March 2004, JBB performed "About Five Pieces for Saxophone and Big Band" by Esa Onttonen with Mikko Innanen as guest soloist. Kari “Sonny” Heinilä conducted the concert.

In January 2003, JBB performed "Folkmoods West" – a piece written for big band and folk music group by Timo Alakotila.

The band has cooperated over the years with many guest artists and conductors – e.g. Lucas van Mejrvik (NL), Jerper Riis (DK), Scott Stroman (UK), Pete Churchill (UK), David Goloshokin (RU), Rebeca Mauleon-Santana (US), Tapio Maunuvaara (SE) – and Finnish musicians like Jukka Perko, Kari Heinilä, Antti Rissanen, Mikko Innanen, Marko Vasama, Jere Laukkanen, Petri Juutilainen, Raimo Henriksson, Sami Saari, Veeti Kallio and Aki Sirkesalo.
